Meaning of Photography

Sun Feb 24, 2008, 4:09 PM
To me photography is capturing moments in time. To express yourself through the portrayal of any moment or image you capture. It allows anyone who gazes upon it to reflect on that moment in time in any way they desire. It can evoke certain feelings, thoughts, ideas or just present the pleasure of simple beauty. It can give you new perspective on things, show you everyday sights in ways you otherwise wouldn't have seen them. They are like memories. To the eye, it captures every visual element of a given subject. To the mind, it can capture much more, to the imagination. The action, the smells, sounds and with a sensitive person with vivid perception, even physical touch.

When taking pictures, your focus should be mostly on what it is you want to capture. With only this much in mind you have a great start. All of the other details come secondary. When you already see so many different things in the world around you, it's very easy to begin capturing those things. When the world around you means nothing to you, or meaning must be brought to you, you'll find it more difficult. In this way, I find photography and spirituality or philosophy are connected. Previous pictures can give you the opportunity to see through your own eyes of the past. To express yourself with photography means to take something from within yourself and create the image of that thing externally. If you know yourself well, this comes easy. If you don't, you'll find it more difficult. In this way, too, I find spirituality and photography are connected.

This is what I find in photography.
